The Momentous Journey CITC to ERDF

The journey of Central IT College (CITC), starting in 2001 with a handful of students, to the establishment of the Education Research & Development Foundation (ERDF) in 2005 which envisages establishment of a number of schools and colleges of higher education catering to thousands of students of the North East, is perhaps the most momentous journey by any educational institution of this region. The toil and dedication of the dreamers behind the project have not gone waste – the beginning of the year 2007 saw the Central IT College getting the ISO 9001-2000 certification, a recognition of its high standards and a feat attained by hardly a few other educational institutions of the North East.

Himself a first class post graduate degree holder in Computer Application from the Aligarh Muslim University, Mr. Mahbub-ul Hoque, the Director of CITC could never reconcile to the fact that thousands of students from the North East were traveling to cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Pune for their college education. In order to provide quality professional courses right at the doorstep, he conceived the idea of setting up CITCin 2001and there was no looking back ever since then. Today the College has more than 2,500 students on its rolls undergoing courses in diverse streams – from Computer Science to Information Technology, and from Business Management to Bio Technology.

What sets CITC apart from other colleges is that the focus is not just confined to curriculum or within the four walls of the class room. If one group of MBA students are on an industry exposure. trip to North India today, then tomorrow another group of students from IT stream are setting out for an on the job training at some technology park in another part of the country. If the students of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department are busy organising a photo exhibition this month, the students of Bio Technology are working out interaction with Medical institutions for creating awareness about AIDS and cancer. In other words, the stress of the College is on character building and making of leaders who will contribute the irmite in taking India to the status of a super power in the coming decade.

The ERDF has been conceived for imparting top quality education in the fields of engineering science, management, information technology and computer science, applied life sciences such as bio technology and bio chemistry etc. with a view to ensuring all round professional development of the students of the North East through industry academia linkages. The ERDF will lay added emphasis on the development of the weaker sections of the society through proper education targeted towards attainment of self reliance and self sufficiency.

The Foundation has already undertaken a number of programmes to promote collaborative initiatives with industries, R & Dcentres, Banks and financial institutions in the region so as to enable students to understand the ground realities of the local society and then develop the future human resource potential of the region for solving the immediate problems that confront the community. The Foundation is also committed to contribute its in puts towards the plans, programmes and policies of the Government for the total uplift of the region in general and that of the economically deprived sections in particular.

The flagship institute of the Foundation, CITC, is backed up by a faculty of over sixty teachers who have been drawn from diverse streams and who have been appointed after thorough scrutiny in which they have displayed their excellence over their counterparts elsewhere. Even though located in rented premises, the College is equipped with most modern class rooms, lecture theatres, auditorium, library and state of the art laboratories. It has its own bus service and ambulance, a facility which very few other educational institutes can boast of. All endeavours are on for establishing a campus of its own on land procured for the purpose, a dream which is likely to materialise soon.

The placement record of the College is getting more impressive day by day. The students of CITC have already been absorbed in top MNCs and industries such as Accenture, Amity Business School, Bajaj Allianz, DPS, ICICI, Maruti Udyog Limited, Samsung, SikkimManipal University and so on and so forth.

Starting with just one College a few years ago, the Foundation has now a second college under its wings - the Regional College of Higher Education (RCHE) affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. This is the first College in Assam to offer graduation courses in Biotechnology and Biochemistry. Setting up of this college has not only brought quality education within the reach of a large number of students of this region, but also saved the parents who had to spend huge sums of money for sending their wards to other states for undergoing these courses.

In its bid to bring modern education within the reach of the rural masses, ERD Foundation inaugurated the Central Public School at Gyan Village in Patharkandi of Karimganj District on April 16, 2008. The School which has been set up in a border area was inaugurated by Prof G.D. Sharma, Pro Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar. Prof
Sharma assured the School authorities of all support from the University in the days to come.

Mr. Anurag Goel, Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj remarked that he had not seen such a modern and state of the art school in any rural area anywhere in the country. He called the School ‘a place of pilgrimage’, Chief Consultant of ERD
Foundation.

Coinciding with the inauguration of the School, A ‘Career Guidance Handbook’ was unveiled by Mr B.K. Nath, Chairman of Jugasankha Group of Newspapers which highlighted the ambitious career guidance programme taken up by the Foundation. The computer lab at the School will be utilised to impart working knowledge of the computer to the unemployed youth of the village. Similarly, the womenfolk of the village will be taught embroidery and tailoring by the School authorities. Later on, the Foundation will help them in getting gainful employment.

The School is expected to get C.B.S.E. affiliation before the end of the year.

Very soon, the ERDF is going to lay the foundation of the Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) in Meghalaya which is going to change the higher education scenario of the region. This will also mark the foray of ERDF in other states of the North East other than Assam.

Instead of producing just graduates and post graduates, the ERDF is committed to the moulding of responsible citizens and future leaders coming out of the institutions run by ERDF. It is imperative that the Government and the people at large need to come forward to extend their full hearted support to the noble plans of the Foundation. There is no denying of the fact that only effective and quality education can eradicate the unrest in the minds of our youth who without the right direction would be compelled to take the path of terrorism and violence. If we have to invest, we have to do it in our young boys and girls.
